How Much Weight Should You Lift on a GLP-1?
How Much Weight Should You Lift on a GLP-1?
The short answer: if you can easily do three or more reps past your target, the weight is too light, and it's time to add 2.5 to 5 pounds.
That answer surprises a lot of clients, because most of them think the win is just showing up to lift at all while they're adjusting to a GLP-1. Showing up matters, but it isn't the whole picture.
Here's what I see over and over. A client starts a GLP-1, starts losing weight, starts strength training a few times a week, and then stays on the exact same weight for every exercise for months. Nothing changes on the dumbbell rack even as everything changes on the scale.
Muscle doesn't respond to frequency alone. It responds to load. Your muscles keep themselves around because they have a job to do. If the demand on them never increases, your body has no strong reason to protect that tissue while it's losing weight everywhere else, and on a GLP-1, that's the exact risk you're trying to avoid.
So the number worth tracking isn't your weekly weigh-in. It's the weight you're actually lifting.
The simple test
At the end of a set, ask yourself honestly: could I have done three more reps at this weight? If yes, it's time to go up, even a small amount. A 2.5 to 5 pound jump feels minor in the moment but compounds significantly over weeks and months.
This doesn't mean every session needs to feel maxed out, and it doesn't mean ignoring how your energy feels on a given day. It means checking in with your load regularly instead of defaulting to whatever felt comfortable when you started.
This is one piece of a bigger picture. Timing your protein, training all your major muscle groups, and progressing your load are the three levers that actually protect muscle while you're microdosing, and it's exactly what we build into the Microdose Method™ so you're not guessing week to week.
If this is the piece you've been missing, we're opening a small group of founding spots for The Microdose Method™ soon. It's built around exactly this, protein timing, full-body training, and load progression, mapped out week by week so you always know what to do next.
